Thergothon
Acknowledged as a pioneer in the small genre known as funeral doom,
Thergothon formed in 1990, originally playing standard death metal
but soon opting for the extreme of attempting to play as slowly
as possible, while retaining some of death metal's intensity.
A demo was released in 1991 under the difficult title
Fhtagn-nagh Yog-Sothoth (derived from H.P. Lovecraft),
and a year later recording commenced on the debut album
Stream From The Heavens.
Indeed, this is one of the slowest
albums recorded.
The style isn't quite as oppressive as, say,
Esoteric,
but the combination of gutteral vocals and drawn-out, often
ambient riffs does lead to a dreary, yet still engaging,
listening experience.
By the time of its release in 1994, the band had already broken up,
the trio deciding they had accomplished what they had set out to
and wished to explore other avenues.
