3 Inches Of Blood
Flying in the face of the current trends in metal is Canada's own
3 Inches Of Blood, a band clearly influenced by the past
while avoiding the tired rehash of old riffs like some bands
that attempt this style.
The band formed in 2000 and released their debut album,
Battlecry Under A Winter Sun, then signed to Roadrunner for
Advance And Vanquish in 2004, though by that time four
of the six members from the debut were already gone.
It's a decent bet that most listeners will like or dislike
this band based on the vocals.
The band employ two vocalists, one supplying harsh screams
(the lesser of the two styles here), while the other is one
of those high-pitched, shrill, love-him-or-hate-him types --
he's certainly not afraid to hit the high notes, but at times
he can be a bit much.
Musically, it's primarily
Iron Maiden
on overdrive, with twin guitar harmonies aplenty and impressive
drumming from the recently departed Matt Wood.
Yet it's not all early 80's worship, as there is a modern edge
to the songwriting that gives them a fresh edge
(indeed, had the band opted for a straight hardcore vocalist,
these guys might slot nicely in the current metalcore genre).
Some breadth of songwriting wouldn't go amiss here, as several
of the songs have similar tempos and riffs, but
Advance And Vanquish is a solid effort.
