Chrome Division

Chrome Division was formed by a pair of Dimmu Borgir members (longtime vocalist Shagrath and onetime bassist Nagash) back in 1999, the pair wishing to do something far removed from black metal. Nagash eventually left the project (indeed, he also left Dimmu shortly thereafter, going on to man The Kovenant), but Shagrath (here as a guitarist) fleshed out a full band, and eventually an album, Doomsday Rock’n’Roll, was released in 2006. True enough, this is not black metal at all, but greasy, biker rock/metal, reminiscent of bands such as Motorhead during their more recent, upbeat moments (both style-wise and vocal-wise), or perhaps Hellacopters. Not every song is an outright winner, but in general there’s enough simplistic yet effective gruff heavy rock to keep fans of this kind of stuff interested (whether Dimmu fans take to this is another matter). The project has prospered, with four albums released as of 2014.
