The Finnish band Insomnium was formed in 1997 and went
the usual route of recording demos (two, to be exact)
that eventually garnered the band a recording contract
with Candlelight Records in 2001.
Since The Day It All Came Down is the band's second
album, and a solid album it is, with their
blend of current melodic death metal and the more
melancholic material of, say, late-period
Katatonia
or even
Opeth
at times.
With the rise of melodic death metal as both its own genre
and as an influence on other genres (for example, metalcore),
it is getting harder and harder for such bands to establish
their own identities.
Insomnium isn't quite in the category of truly unique or
original bands, but they're on the right track, as
Since The Day It All Came Down
is an enjoyable listen, and certainly recommended for those
into the melodic death metal genre.
