Tyr

Hailing from the tiny, remote Faroe Islands, Tyr released one of the more impressive Viking metal albums in 2006's Ragnarok. The songs have a rollicking, epic quality to them -- this is almost Viking prog metal, such is the grandeur on display. Heri Joensen has a clear, unique singing voice (the closest comparison that comes to mind is Lars Nedland of Solefald), his vocal harmonies a perfect complement to the music. A remarkably mature and accomplished album, Ragnarok is arguably among the best pure Viking metal albums released in the last several years. The band has maintained its high standards over a seven-album career thus far.
