Unto Others

This Portland outfit, originally named Idle Hands but renamed to Unto Others in 2020 for trademark reasons, is one of two bands coming into being following the breakup of Spellcaster. Whatever problems that band had, personality conflicts doesn't seem to be among them, as there's plenty of interweaving membership between Spellcaster, this band, and the third band (Silver Talon), even as all three bands have different styles. Here, the difference is most striking, as the 2019 Idle Hands debut Mana showcases an original blend of traditional metal and gothic rock, the latter due largely, but not exclusively, to the fine baritone crooning of Gabriel Franco (who played in Spellcaster but did not sing). Goth metal/rock seemed to reach a pinnacle perhaps a decade ago with several bands (an inordinate number from Finland), but here the style feels like a breath of fresh air. There's plenty of potential here that hopefully will be released as the band continues as Unto Others.
