Ahab

Almost since their founding in 2004, Germany's Ahab has been one of the leading purveyors of funeral doom, that ultra-slow, ultra-heavy branch of classic doom metal. The band's lyrical inspiration comes from the sea -- their debut, The Call Of The Wretched Sea, derives from the novel Moby Dick (Ahab is the main character from that novel), while the successive albums are similarly derived from nautical literature. While playing at such a slow speed may seem limiting, Ahab is not about stagnation -- comparing that debut with the more recent The Boats Of The Glen Carrig, the progression is quite evident. Wretched is full-on funeral doom, arguably one of the best examples ever recorded, while Carrig subtlely explores new ideas and broadens the confines of the genre, with vocalist Daniel Droste mixing a fine clean baritone with his unearthly growls, and a greater sense of dynamics with psychedelic ambient moments sitting side-by-side with the crushing riffs that define funeral doom. With four excellent albums recorded over their decade-plus long career, they've already accomplished plenty, but the best may be yet to come.
