Anareta

Stringed instruments like violins and cellos occasionally make their appearance in the metal arena, but almost exclusively in supporting roles. New Orleans' Anareta changes all that, with an interesting configuration (a sextet of guys and gals, with a trio of violin/viola/cello alongside guitar/bass/drums), and that stringed ensemble is front and center, blending perfectly with the traditional instruments. The result, then, is plaintive, somewhat dreary doom-ish metal combined with a orchestral/chamber music feel, with harsh singing over the top. It's inventive, engaging, even upbeat at times even though the overall vibe is usually on the somber side.
