Atriarch

Atriarch formed in 2009 and as of this writing have five albums to their credit, the one reviewed here being the third in 2014's An Unending Pathway. The band slots loosely in the doom camp, but this is not your typical Candlemass clone, as influences ranging from darkwave to sludge to post-rock and even the occasional black flourish combine seamlessly to present a powerful and original style. A fine and diverse vocal performance ties it all together, as Lenny Smith's singing ranges from the more prevalent intoned crooning to the occasional harsher approach. It's gloomy and despondent, but also compelling.
