Aydra

Aydra is, or was, a part of a small but select group of Italian technically-minded death metallers (others in this group would be Gory Blister and, to some extent, Ephel Duath). Icon Of Sin, the band's only full-length release to date, is a frenzied affair, a bit reminiscient of prime Atheist, with plenty of twisted riffing and time changes and rather scratchy semi-death vocals over the top. While there's a good deal of impressive musicianship on display (the drummer is a complete maniac, in a good way, and there are plenty of nice guitar solos), the songs lack any real identity, as the band jumps from one riff to another without establishing any riff for any period of time. Still, it's an impressive work, short and to the point, not overstaying its welcome. The band has completed a new album to be released in spring 2004.
