Deathspell Omega debuted in 2000 as a somewhat ordinary Norse-inspired
primitive black metal band, but then took a detour.
Indeed, the trio of albums consisting of
Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice
(2004),
Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum
(2007), and
Paracletus
(2010)
firmly established band as extreme metal innovators.
This is complex, experimental, exhausting,
often freeform-sounding dischordant
metal
(as many have stated, their style is more similar to tech death bands
than traditional black metal).
And while many bands have hurled such sounds against a wall hoping something
will stick, Deathspell Omega more often then not succeed
where others have failed.
The French black metal scene is often characterized by avant-garde-ness,
and these guys are one of a select few
(sharing some accolades with, say,
Blut Aus Nord)
that are responsible for that reputation.
Adding to the intrigue is that,
for a band so lauded and revered, they have famously kept a remarkably
low profile -- they do not play live, have no social media presence, and
while some core members are known, the actual membership and participants
data is at best incomplete.
