Devourment

Dallas' own Devourment has been plying their trade since 1995, led by Ruben Rosas. Reviewed here is the band's most recent effort, 2019's Obscene Majesty, only the band's fifth album (six if you consider the two different versions of Butcher The Weak as separate entities), as the band has broken up and reformed a few times since their debut twenty years prior. Majesty embodies brutal death metal -- relentless, pummelling riffs overlaid with impossibly low gurgly vocals. At times it's a bit one-note, there's no coming up for air as the onslaught continues, though there is some good pacing between the faster parts and the slower, grindier sections. Not everyone's cup of tea to be sure, but for those into the more brutal (yet still somewhat old-school-inspired) side of death metal, Devourment delivers.
