Sortilege

Mixing a strong Iron Maiden songwriting style with clear, quality vocals courtesy of Christian Augustin, Sortilege was arguably one of the best of the French metal bands of the mid-80's. Though the original albums were all sung in French (as were practically all French metal albums back then), English-language versions of the two albums (Metamorphosis and Heroes Tears) were later released on Steamhammer Records. Their recording career was rather short (two albums and an EP) and they broke up soon after their last album in 1986. In 2020 Augustin put together a new lineup and a new album, Phoenix, featuring re-recordings of their older songs, was released under the Sortilege name, but whether this is the latest incarnation of the original band or an offshoot led by a former member is still in question. A album of new material by the same new lineup is set for a 2023 release.
