Notre Dame
Bands founded/led by drummers are not very common in the music
business, much less a horror metal outfit led by a drummer,
which places this here Notre Dame in rare company.
Snowy Shaw already had an impressive resumé to his credit, having
drummed for countless mostly Scandinavian bands including
King Diamond,
Dimmu Borgir, and
Memento Mori,
but he was itching to do his own thing, and thus Notre Dame was
born, recruiting a female vocalist (according to the bio, an
old girlfriend!) as well as a pair of enigmatic
French brothers reputedly
descended from Marquis De Sade himself (actually these two were
completely made up characters, played onstage by various folks,
it's unclear who played on the albums).
The slightly over-the-top imagery aside, the music on
Le Theatre Du Vampire
simply
smokes, a vicious blend of blackened
Mercyful Fate riffing, the horror theatrics of
King Diamond, and a slight black metal influence due largely to Shaw's
vocals.
The band was put to rest in late 2004.
