Notre Dame
Bands founded/led by drummers are not very common in the music
business, much less a horror metal outfit led by a drummer,
but that's precisely what Notre Dame is.
Snowy Shaw already had an impressive resumé to his credit, having
drummed for both
King Diamond and
Mercyful Fate, as well as
Memento Mori and the
Illwill project,
but he was itching to do his own thing, and thus Notre Dame was
born, recruiting a female vocalist (according to the bio, an
old girlfriend!) as well as a pair of French brothers reputedly
descended from Marquis De Sade himself.
The slightly over-the-top imagery aside, the music here simply
smokes, a vicious blend of prime
Mercyful Fate riffing, the theatrics of
King Diamond, and a slight black metal influence due largely to Shaw's
vocals.
Frankly,
Le Theatre Du Vampire is an outstanding release, perhaps
better than one might initially expect, certainly a highly
recommended album.
Shaw recently announced that an early November show would be their
last, as the band is breaking up.
Shaw will no doubt keep busy with other bands/projects in the future.
