Carcariass

Though not the most well-known French death metal band, Carcariass is one of the elders of the scene, formed back in 1991, though it wasn't until 1997 that their first album was released. Their 2002 album Killing Process shows the band maturing quite nicely from their early days --- clearly a technical death metal album, but with a degree of melody and catchiness not often associated with the genre, and the guitars have a nice steely edge that brings out the best in the songs. There is the occasional Cynic-style jazz element, though it's not as obvious or pervasive as other bands in this field. A fine album from a band that still may be on the rise.
