Kalas

Kalas brings together several musicians from the East Bay music scene, with the big name being Matt Pike from the mighty High On Fire. To date the sole album from this group is the self-titled effort from 2006. The band's style rests somewhere between sludge and stoner metal, as they aren't as oppressively heavy as most sludge metal, but the doomier pace and Pike's gruff vocal style slots them as far heavier than the typical stoner rock band. There's a fair amount songwriting depth to keep things interesting, and while no one band comes to mind as a soundalike, there are shades of Neurosis, maybe a bit of Mastodon, plus a few shades of High On Fire on occasion. As of this writing (summer 2011) it's unclear whether there are plans for more recordings, as High On Fire is surely Pike's main priority and the others no doubt are working with their respective bands as well.
