Melechesh

Melechesh is a member of a small yet select group of extreme Israeli metal bands, formed in Jerusalem in 1993. They recorded and released an album in 1996, but with the arrival of Absu drummer Proscriptor in 1999, the band really took off, and they have been steadily rising in popularity ever since. They are best labelled a black metal band, but in several respects that term is a shade inaccurate, especially given the band's penchant for incorporating native ethnic influences into their sound. Mixing Middle Eastern melodies with extreme metal is not completely unheard of, as at least a couple of bands have attempted it (Nile comes to mind), but in Melechesh's case the influences are greater and the fusion more seemless -- only Orphaned Land (who approach the concept from a quite different point of view) can match Melechesh in this area. Comparing the last two releases, Djinn seems to contain more of the aforementioned Middle Eastern influences, but Sphynx is tighter and sharper, with Proscriptor's outstanding drumming in full force. Both of these albums are quite recommended to extreme metal fans.
