Oceans Of Slumber

It's been quite the journey so far for Oceans Of Slumber. The Texans debuted in 2013 with Aetherial to little fanfare, but swapping the capable Ronnie Allen with chanteusse Cammie Gilbert was a game-changer, and folks started taking notice. Their first proper album with Gilbert at the helm, 2016's Winter, was an intriguing blend of a prog metal base, with doom influences and even death/black traces, all overlaid with Gilbert's soulful crooning. It was the sort of album that, while quite good in its own right, seemed to lay the groundwork for more to come. Momentum was building for the band when, somewhat unexpectedly, three core members departed following 2018's The Banished Heart, leaving Gilbert and founding drummer Dobber Beverley to pick up the pieces and soldier on. And that they did, with a renewed vigor on 2020's self-titled release, the title no doubt signalling a new vision for the band. Predictably to some, 2022's Starlight And Ash continues the march away from their early roots -- gone are the extreme tendencies, the complex arrangements, and indeed a large part of their metal core itself, as Gilbert, Beverley and company branch into lush, epic, soaring compositions with Gilbert's vocals continuing to take center stage. The group seems to be shift membership constantly (two more departures since Starlight's release), but this band has weathered that storm before, and they seem poised to continue their path.
