Having previously released a self-financed album,
Tormented, in 1996,
Staind got their break when they were "discovered" by Limp Bizkit
vocalist Fred Durst (as the story goes, Durst was initially turned
off by the debut album's artwork and almost gave up on the band,
but was later won over after seeing Staind live).
The major-label release Dysfunction (co-produced by Durst)
has several of the trademarks of the late-90's alterna-metal sound,
occasionally bringing to mind bands such as
Tool,
Alice In Chains,
and perhaps a touch of Korn.
The two releases since Dysfunction has seen the band expand
on their style without making any wholesale changes in
their basic approach.
