Tal Dorgar
Tal Dorgar is, simply, one of the most unique-sounding progressive
metal bands I've heard in a long time.
They've released a couple of cassettes in the past (one of which
piqued my interest a few years ago), but
Zero To Nowhere is their
first CD, completely self-financed.
The band has a quirky progressive style, with several interesting
time signatures (i.e. not 4/4) and a strange fuzzy guitar sound,
with rather understated, almost alternative-sounding (but more
melodic) vocals.
The closest comparison I can think of is early Thought Industry, as
both bands have similarly intriguing influences and penchants for
unusual lyrics/song titles (such as "Politics And Insects" and
"Vex The Obscure" here).
The guitar sound and vocal style take a bit of getting used to, and
it would be nice to see what the band could do with a larger
recording budget, but
Zero To Nowhere is one of the coolest albums
I've heard in a while -- a sure Top Ten pick.
