Xysma

Though they never were as famous as their fellow Finnish bands that succeeded them, Xysma is highly regarded as a cult metal band, and one that was highly influential on the Finnish rock/metal scene. The band is remarkable for constantly changing styles throughout its career, moving from grindcore (the Swarming Of The Maggots 1989 demo, still regarded as a cult classic) to death metal (1991’s Yeah) to a quirky death’n’roll style (First And Magical, released in 1993), to retro/semi-stoner rock (Deluxe and Lotto) to, finally, pop rock (1998’s Girl On The Beach). And it’s not like a constantly revolving lineup was responsible for these changes – this was mostly a steady lineup, a quintet of guys simply not willing to stay in one place for very long. Eventually tensions between the members forced the group to disband in 1998, leaving behind an odd but enduring legacy.
