Hamferð

Tyr was the first metal band of note to hail from the tiny North Atlantic nation of the Faroe Islands, and now Hamferð looks set to make their presence known, after securing a record deal with Metal Blade and releasing Tamsins Likam in 2018, their second full-length album. Tamsins is a wonder, a rich expression of doomdeath at its best, with some forays into funeral doom territory (perhaps reminding one a bit of the mighty Ahab), yet with plenty of quiet interludes that make the crushing doom all the more effective. Vocalist Jón Aldará seemlessly alternates between a soulful clean tenor and effective death growls, each instrument makes distinctive contributions, and each track contributes to the whole in unique ways. Both doomdeath and funeral doom can sometimes falter due to a lack of variation or dimension, and that never happens here. Tamsins Likam has earned the title of best album for 2018 on these pages and is arguably one of the top albums of its genre to emerge in years.
