Insect Ark

The wonderfully-named Insect Ark hails from Salt Lake City and is founded by multi-instrumentalist Dana Schechter, initially as a purely one-woman act but now expanded to a duo with a drummer along for the ride. The style here (as heard on 2018's Marrow Hymns) is experimental instrumental drone-doom with a liberal use of slide guitar, which pretty much puts Insect Ark on their own plane, as there are few bands that can even be listed as vague soundalikes. Typical of the drone genre, there's little in the way of conventional song structures and rhythms, but plenty of pyschedelic atmosphere and sparse soundscapes, and the way the slide guitar bends and weaves is mesmerizing.

Recent album: Raw Blood Singing, released on June 7, 2024.
