Tombs

Hailing from Brooklyn and making a splash with their 2009 effort Winter Hours, Tombs combines several genres pretty seemlessly, though most will consider these guys either sludge metal or in the post-hardcore mold. Neurosis is a clear reference point here, but more the early, hardcore-ish Neurosis rather than the more tribal later-period material, and Neurosis is better thought of as an influence rather than a soundalike. Others point to a black metal influence, but to these ears it's slight at best, as it's really the sludge aspect of the band that dominates. Like others in the atmospheric hardcore category, Tombs makes good use of light and shade through some more ambient moments such as "Story Of A Room" and "Old Dominion". Overall Winter Hours is an impressive debut -- they haven't quite found that "it" factor that really makes them unique, but there is room for growth.
