Manilla Road

Led by Mark Shelton, Manilla Road is one of the great underground American metal bands, one of those groups who never rose to superstar status but is eminently well known to metal fans the world over. The band formed in the late seventies, saw their rise to prominence in the early 80's (the trio of albums consisting of Crystal Logic, Open The Gates, and The Deluge, released from 1983 to 1986, remains the band's finest stretch and a solid representation of their style), and then continued to exist with varying lineups surrounding Shelton, recording quite regularly over the year, culminating with 2017's To Kill A King. Their style really didn't waver much over the years (with the possible exception of 1992's The Circus Maximus, which was intended as a Shelton solo project), but that style was really quite distinctive, with low-tuned guitars, gruff yet clear vocals, and a dark, epic, mystical feel that was rarely duplicated. Shelton's passing in July 2018 (while touring, perhaps a fitting way to go for such a dedicated metaller) likely spells the end of a lasting career.
