Omnium Gatherum

Omnium Gatherum is a Finnish band specializing in melodic death metal, a field more often dominated by their Swedish neighbors. Their debut album, Spirits And August Light, combines some of the more familiar sounds of the genre with a slight melancholic edge (the band themselves list Katatonia and Anathema as influences -- while neither is a dominant influence here, shades of both can be heard) as well as subtle keyboard touches that lend a bit of distinctiveness to the songs. For pure originality the band isn't at the top level yet (though there are plenty of bands in this field that are far more generic than Omnium Gatherum), but Spirits is a fine melodic death metal album, and their next album may well propel them into the first division.
